GDAT 4 Help

GDAT 4 (Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool) is a desktop app that helps genealogists make sense of their DNA matches. Load your matches from the testing companies, research and annotate them, paint shared segments across the chromosomes, cluster matches into family lines, and work with ancestor trees to find and confirm common ancestors — all on your own computer, with your data staying local.

GDAT 4 is a ground-up rebuild of the classic GDAT app. It is the same tool, reorganized into a modern layout: a sidebar of workspaces down the left, a context bar across the top, and tabbed screens inside the busier workspaces. If you used the classic version, the concepts are identical — only the navigation has changed.

Before you can use GDAT 4: GDAT 4 works only with unencrypted databases, and each database must first be opened in GDAT 2026 to prepare it for GDAT 4. GDAT 2026 has not been released yet, so GDAT 4 cannot be used until it is available.

The GDAT 4 window at a glance

Two things frame everything you do:

The GDAT 4 main window — top context bar, left workspace sidebar, and the Dashboard.
The GDAT 4 main window — top context bar, left workspace sidebar, and the Dashboard.
Everything is scoped to the active Profile (kit). Whatever you pick in the top-bar Profile selector decides which kit's matches, segments, and tree every screen shows. Switching it re-scopes every screen and clears the selected match.
