Install & Setup
DGAI runs on macOS and Windows. You can install the standalone app, or use the AI Chat
tab that ships inside the DNAGedcom Client.
DGAI is in beta. It is early software under active development — screens, options, and wording may change. Your feedback helps: the
DNAGedcom User Group and
support@dnagedcom.com are the best places to report issues.

macOS — Apple Silicon
For M1/M2/M3/M4 Macs. Signed & notarized

Not sure which Mac you have? Apple menu → About This Mac. If
the chip says “Apple M…” choose Apple Silicon; if it says “Intel” choose Intel.
macOS
- Open the downloaded .dmg and drag DGAI into your
Applications folder.
- Launch it from Applications. The build is signed and notarized, so it should open normally.
Windows
- Unzip DGAI-Beta-win-x64.zip to a folder you can find again (e.g. your Documents).
- Run DGAI from that folder. If SmartScreen warns about an unrecognized app, choose
More info → Run anyway.
Using it inside the DNAGedcom Client
DGAI is also built into the DNAGedcom Client as an AI Chat
tab — if you already run the Client, you may not need a separate download. The chat behaves the same
way described throughout this guide.
What DGAI needs
- A GDAT database. DGAI reads a GDAT v3 database (a SQLite
.db file). It also recognizes the DNAGedcom Client's “gather” database —
the format is detected automatically. If you don't have one yet, build it with
GDAT 4 or the DNAGedcom Client.
- An AI to talk to. Either a cloud provider (an API key — e.g. Anthropic) or a
local AI on your own machine (Ollama or LM Studio, no key needed). See
Choosing an AI Backend.
DGAI never writes to your database. It opens GDAT strictly read-only, so
it's safe to point it at your working database while GDAT is open.
